What Is EXIF Data, and How Do You View or Remove It From Photos?
EXIF data can include your camera model, exposure settings, and even GPS coordinates. Here's how to check what's hiding in your photos.
What is EXIF data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded directly inside a JPG, PNG, or TIFF file at the moment it's captured. It can include the camera make and model, lens used, exposure settings (shutter speed, aperture, ISO), the date and time taken, and — if location services were enabled — the exact GPS coordinates where the photo was shot.
Why it matters
- Privacy — GPS coordinates embedded in a photo can reveal your home address or exact location before you ever share it publicly.
- Authenticity — camera and exposure data can help verify whether a photo is an original, unedited capture.
- Photography learning — reviewing your own exposure settings across many shots helps you understand what's actually working.
How to view EXIF data
- Open the Image Metadata Viewer.
- Upload a photo.
- View the full report: camera make/model, lens, exposure settings, GPS coordinates (if present), and color profile.
Why many photos show "no camera data found"
Photos that have already passed through social media platforms, messaging apps, or another image editor commonly have their EXIF data stripped automatically as a privacy measure — so seeing no camera data is common and not a sign of a problem.
Frequently asked questions
Does every photo have GPS data? Only if location services were enabled on the camera or phone at the time it was taken.
Does this tool remove metadata, or just show it? It currently only reads and displays metadata — your original file isn't modified.
Should I check for GPS data before posting photos publicly? Yes, especially for photos taken at home or other private locations you don't want identifiable.
